I’m speaking in Cincinnati for a fantastic technology company, and we’re standing at a point of convergence—literal and metaphorical. Behind me, the Ohio River flowsthrough a network of bridges, connecting not just states, but stories, histories, and futures. It’s a reminder: We’re all on the edge of something.
Maybe you’re at the edge of a decision, a disruption, or a dream. Or trying to bridge a chasm of understanding or possibility. The current of your life is in constant flow. But are you drifting … or driven and directed? The river teaches us a powerful lesson. To live and lead with confidence, you need to look both ways.
Upstream—To see what brought you here. Who and what came before you? Which timeless lessons are most relevant right now? What do you want to stand for and honor?
And downstream—to imagine your future and the impact you’ll leave behind. What do you want to learn and build? Who will you help? Remember, you, and this moment, are upstream of that all that follows. So please, take a few minutes to write down these answers:
1. Name your edge. What decision, project, or challenge has you on edge right now?
2. Honor your upstream. How exactly did you get here? What skills, lessons, passions, and influences do you need to draw upon?
3. Chart your downstream. Specifically, how do you intend to grow? Who do you hope to impact? And how? And how can you start right now?
When you find yourself at the edge—don’t step back. Pause to look upstream and downstream. And then act with confidence, courage, and conviction. Because this isn’t just where the view is best. It’s where transformation begins. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
