Are you using this proven principle to achieve more of what you want? We’re in Sea Island, Georgia, boosting off balance results!
I’m speaking this morning at a destination event rewarding the top 60 distributors for a fantastic insurance company. While there are roughly 4,000 independent agents for the brand, this small group delivers about 80 percent of total production!
This is a living, and extreme example, of what Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto first postulated in 1906: Universally, the vast majority of the results, about 80 percent, are derived from a far smaller percentage of the causes, roughly 20 percent. Over a century later, the “80/20 rule” still stands up to scrutiny.
For example:
- 80 % of your success stems from 20 percent of your activity.
- 80 % of your revenue, from 20% of your clients.
- 80% of your stress comes from 20% of your inputs.
- 80% of your energy comes from 20% of your routines.
- Even 80% of the quality of a relationship can hinge on just 20% of what you do or say.
The numbers aren’t exact, but the principle holds true. And it means we don’t have to be perfect or maximally efficient. But we do need to discover the “vital few” that make the most difference, good or bad, then, give them the attention they deserve. Enhance what most helps and extract what most harms.
Great companies (like my client) understand you get more of what’s working by focusing more on what’s working! The question is, which 20 % of your time or activities deserves 80% of your focus and investment? Until next week, Stay Off Balance On Purpose.
