Today I’ll offer a suggestion that may cause some pushback: Begin with no end in mind.
One of Stephen Covey’s, 7 Habits is “Begin with the end in mind,” meaning first establish clear targets and goals so that all of your efforts can be well aimed and coordinated from the start. Sound advice, obviously, so why would I ask you to consider a different view? Two reasons.
First, during times of rapid change and technical chaos, which we’re in, today’s targets can quickly change. The end you have in mind may soon become limiting or irrelevant. And often we don’t understand potential until the journey’s underway. So, it’s good to have goals and better to understand what motivates you to pursue them.
And second, if your “aim” has an end, it’s probably too small. When I say “begin with no end in mind,” I’m talking about ultimate aims and continuous, lifelong improvement. Set your sights on your highest principles and ideals that will continue to pull and stretch you.
Too many people are stuck, getting ready to get ready, failing to “begin” because they’re not yet sure which “end” to pursue. If that’s you, please just start somewhere. Even a clumsy, imperfect beginning is better than wasting time.
You have infinite potential, meaning you’ll never run out of opportunities to learn, grow, or contribute. And the more you do, the greater your capacity for even more. So begin, knowing any end you envision is really just a new beginning. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
