You’re probably tired of hearing how disruption leads to opportunity. And even if we get the concept, how do we apply it in the midst of what’s happening? Let’s break that down from Boston.
I’m speaking here today for an international conference of building owners and managers about how to best engage with change and chaos. And Boston’s Seaport is the perfect backdrop for that subject.
This area’s American story spans the Revolution, to a maritime powerhouse, through post WWII industrial decline, then massive reinvestment and development. What was abandoned piers and wasteland is now a thriving, reinvigorated district for investment, research, and remarkable living.
But the lesson is bigger than real estate. We all manage the “properties” of our lives –physical assets, and also your career, health, relationships, and reputation. What do all of those have in common? We don’t maintain them. We steward them through time. And sometimes that means we need to redesign, renovate, and even tear down to rebuild.
Positive Chaos is the skill of seeing patterns in the change then reshaping them. Ask yourself: How can I steward what I’ve built while investing in what’s new? And what, that’s outdated, do I need to leave behind?
Consider your valuable portfolio of assets and aspects of life. Where have the tides shifted? Instead of weathering storms, how might you harness them for growth?
And the big one: What do you most want and why? Please don’t ignore or just think about these questions. Write down and answer them to shape your history.
Because chaos will continue to come, but with clarity and the right mindset and skills, it can be a force to accelerate positive change. So instead of rapid reactions, get clear on intentions, then eagerly invite the next transformation. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
