How do you properly honor a legendary human being? We’re in Sarasota, Florida, celebrating circus history and timeless friendship.
Last night I attended the celebration of life ceremony for my good friend and circus superstar, Tony Steele. Among other achievements, Tony performed the first 3 1/2 somersault on the flying trapeze in 1962, a world record that stood for twenty years.
I met Tony fourteen years ago when he was 75, and we became fast friends. He taught me to fly, and also about life, faith, and longevity. He was among the greatest and bravest flyers ever and the best of his generation, attaining worldwide fame, and even a star on Sarasota’s Circus Ring of Fame here in St. Armand’s Circle. But Tony also brought constant encouragement and playful humor to everyone around him, and he embodied a childlike joy.
So it’s no surprise there was a huge turnout last night at the Showfolks Club, the only circus hangout like it in the world. Tony Steele was deeply loved and admired by generations of friends, fellow performers, and, of course, family. The stories were hilarious, the films fantastic, and Tony’s impact, undeniable, profound, and honestly more impressive than his records.
I left with the questions I’ll pass on to you. How do you want to be remembered? How likely is that to happen? And are we, perhaps, playing life a bit too safe, unwilling to let go, be bold and daring, and truly fly?
When you get to know your heroes you’ll see some of their flaws. But you’ll also gain new understanding of what makes them so special and a chance to stretch beyond what you may have thought possible. So let’s swing higher and make a lasting impact. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
