Uncertainty is certainly increasing, both in the world and in your world. So how can we better thrive while not knowing exactly what’s coming? Be certainly uncertain.
Imagine if you couldn’t enjoy a movie unless you knew the ending in advance? Ridiculous, right? In fact, you’d better not tell us. No spoilers! We want to stay curious and surprised as the plot is revealed.
Yet when it comes to real life, most people behave far differently. If they don’t have certainty, guarantees, or details in advance, they’re reluctant to try or begin. With so much that’s unknowable, here’s how you can proceed with confident curiosity.
1. Know what you know. We need, now, to clarify our core beliefs and take stock in what we’ve learned, who we love, and where we find joy and meaning. Do you know who you are and what you stand for, regardless of what’s happening?
2. Embrace what’s unfolding. Like a great story, we need to look for themes, patterns, and clues. My good friend Dan Burrus, who you should definitely read and follow, helps leaders differentiate hard trends, future events that will definitely happen, from soft trends, that may happen. Can you distinguish the difference?
3. Create more certainty. Own the gaps in your skills and knowledge and work to develop them. Build relationships. Ask precise questions, honing in on what you don’t yet know, but certainly can.
When we know what we know and can distinguish what’s knowable from what’s not as it’s still unfolding, well, we can enjoy the show while improving ourselves and being present with those around us. Most certainly, it is an incredible time to live and contribute, and you have a vital part to play. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
