From Watertown, SD, here are four great ways to tap into the power of community.
I’m in this charming, small city to deliver a speech – not for a specific company, but for the town itself. Watertown’s “Day of Development” offers those who live and work here an event to learn and grow together at the historic Goss Opera House.
As a bonus, I’m teaming up with one of my best friends, renowned speaker and guitarist, Mike Rayburn. Mike is opening the conference, and I’m delivering the closing keynote. And we’re meeting all kinds of interesting, genuine people, each bringing unique perspective, challenges, and goals.
Today, I get to be a part of this community, absorbing the energy of others, while contributing something of value.
What communities are you a part of? How are you drawing from community energy and experience, and what are you providing to energize or empower others?
Ironically, the more people you live around, the more isolated you can become. We insulate ourselves with technology and can begin to see people as threats or impediments to get where we’re going or what we want. This isn’t healthy long term, as community is essential for happiness and a developing sense of self. Here are four ways to do that.
1. Show up. Step one is to put yourself physically in the presence of others, bringing your thoughtful attention to the group. It’s simple, and essential, but can be challenging if you’re out of practice.
2. Pitch in. Contribute in a small or big way to something that’s already happening. You don’t have to commit a huge chunk of your life. Just offer to help someone who needs it.
3. Ask and learn. If you’re new to a group, ask for information, history, or introductions.
4. Share your gift. In time, you may see how your experience, skills, or ideas, can make a difference and discover contribution is meaningful.
If you’re too busy for others or just fine on your own, you may be shortchanging the quality and impact of your life. So show up, pitch in, ask, learn, and share, and you may find you’re more capable and complete in community. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
