When does excitement work against you? Let’s improve our ability to execute.
I’m in pursuit of the “perfect ride,” working every section of this three mile loop with zero stops or falls. My best so far is one. I’ve done every section perfectly, but not yet in the same run. And what I’ve noticed is my mistakes are usually preceded by moments of excitement. And the same, at times, is likely true for you.
As you pursue your goals and meet the moments that test you, do you need to “get excited,” or better “execute?” How you engage energy can make or break you. And how we practice and prepare determines how we perform under pressure.
For instance, my speeches bring excitement and energy, but the point isn’t just getting people motivated, but helping them take ownership of a higher vision, then to do what’s required, consistently, to learn and better execute.
You see, when our neurons are excited, or electrically charged, it can bring bursts of energy, fire gross motor movements, and cause impulses that may be forceful or rushed. Emotions can override precision, create problems, and exhaust you, spending energy where it doesn’t serve.
But when we best execute, our energy is more measured. Awareness expands as focus intensifies. We gain coordinated control. And the experience actually slows down as we notice more nuance and detail. That’s the flow state that’s sought by peak performers across many disciplines. And it’s accessed by slow breathing, calm thinking, and practiced repetition.
Some excitement is required, of course, or we’d never get out of bed. And life is exciting, full of inspiring ideas, amazing people, and compelling opportunities. So get excited, and then execute moments with care and competence that’s earned through practiced experience. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
