Here’s a question from a recent coaching conversation. Based on disruption of AI, does it make more sense, right now, to build expertise by going wide or going deep?” Let’s answer that, from Schaumburg, Illinois.
Wide expertise (generalist) involves learning a broad range of skills and subjects. You stay curious, ask questions, and learn to progress quickly from novice to competence. That makes you versatile and well rounded.
The potential downside of this approach is limited mastery in any one area. Jack of all trades, master of none.
Deep expertise (specialist) requires intense focus on a specific skill, trade, or discipline. Over time, you acquire vast knowledge and experience, highly valued by some. The downside: Less versatile. More narrow application. More vulnerable to disruption.
AI is enormously powerful and will undoubtedly be disruptive. But it can’t replace personal experience, human interaction, and applied wisdom. So, I’d suggest we go wide (generalist) and deep (specialist), as follows.
Learn a lot about a lot. Become a learning machine, approaching new topics and skills with the belief that everything is accessible to a degree. The more you learn, the greater your capacity for learning and understanding complex patterns.
And go deep in one professional area you enjoy and highly value. Go deep in what won’t lose value, including communication skills and strong relationships. Go deep into good health and core beliefs.
When you play the long game, time isn’t your constraint, but your advantage. So stay wide, and go deep where it most matters. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
