New York’s Times Square, perhaps one of the world’s most recognized intersections. And also where we recognize that attention and noise often don’t reflect reality.
Until 1904 this (Time Square) was called Longacre Square. When the New York Times built its newspaper headquarters here, the city renamed it overnight. That’s the power of exposure, messaging, and influence. If you can make it here, you’ll make it anywhere.
Fast forward a century and a couple decades. Now screens, not papers, have the power. A thousand at once, each paid for and demanding attention. And let’s face it, bright lights can blur the truth. There’s a fine line between making it and making it up.
Today, we are surrounded everywhere by more information, more opinions, more noise, than ever before. And we’ve learned some lessons:
- Just because something is visible… doesn’t make it credible.
- Just because everyone’s looking… doesn’t mean everyone agrees.
- And just because something is popular… doesn’t make it good, right or true.
Being a follower is just a click away. Being a leader, of a team, a family, or your life, requires so much more. Leadership means being able to separate signal from noise. It requires you to think for yourself.
In your “Times Square,” you may need to stand on principle against what is popular and flashing incessantly. You must communicate intentionally, and build a reputation on results.
