Today let’s explore the intersection and matrix of confidence and competence.
Let’s start with competence, which is the actual ability to solve problems, perform, and follow through. It’s execution, and consistency under pressure. And, it’s also a fascinating progression.
Quite often you don’t know what you don’t know or aren’t yet capable of doing. Experts make even complex skills look easy, so we might think they’re within our grasp. In other words, we start out…
Unconsciously incompetent. Ignorance is bliss. Then we try it, and immediately graduate to being.
Consciously incompetent. Which is an improvement, because you’ve identified the gap. Here’s where many people quit. But if you commit, you can map the course of learning. With instruction and practice you can become…
Consciously competent. You can execute when focused, warmed up, and on top of your game. Then, if you’re really serious, in time and with extensive, varied experience, you may gain mastery. When that happens, you reach the top of this progression becoming…
Unconsciously competent. You’ve logged the hours, learned the nuances, and now you fully embody the learning. You can do it, even when not focused or fixated.
Now, confidence isn’t arrogance, but self assurance and a presence conveying certainty of what you know and will deliver. Confidence is about expectation – yours and others. Now, with all this in mind, let’s explore the intersection and resulting matrix of confidence and competence.
Quadrant “A” is Low Competence and Low Confidence. If you’re here, the “A” stands for accurate. You know what you don’t know. You’re amateur. Aware of your limitations. And if you’re cool with them, apathetic. But, this is also a great place from which to grow.
Quadrant “B” is High Competence but Low Confidence. Do you undervalue what you have to offer? In this case, the B stands for what you’re missing: “belief.” You’re better than you think and belittling your ability and value. Build that confidence with coaching and by taking on bigger tests.
Quadrant “D” is the opposite High Confidence but Low Competence. This is dangerous. Delusional. And if you reside here, you’ll be dumbfounded why you don’t get the opportunities and results you think you deserve. So, get real, then get better.
Quadrant “C” is where we want to be High Confidence and High Competence. You have high “C’s.” You’re capable, have credibility and capacity, and contribute in ways that command respect. You know your value and deliver what you promise.
The truth is we all spend time in each quadrant, depending on the demands and tests of the moment. And as we strive toward confident competence, it’s helpful to realize when we may be operating elsewhere. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
