Are you seeking paradise or purpose? Here’s a reality check from the island of Maui.
I’m speaking this week in Wailea, Maui at a luxury resort. From this paradise location, expertly maintained and managed, it’s easy to think all is perfect and everyone’s happy. Yet, each person you encounter is likely privately struggling with something, small or significant.
Meanwhile, about twenty five miles up the coastline, the town of Lahaina continues to rebuild after the devastating fire over 2 1/2 years ago. From what we’ve seen, heard, and remember, one could assume all is lost, and this the historic town and culture will never thrive again. But that’s equally inaccurate.
Progress has been slow, but relentless. Over 100 homes are rebuilt, and hundreds more are underway. The iconic Banyon tree, once thought destroyed, is now thriving – a symbol of how this community is being reborn, creating a new future with intention. This has taken massive coordination between county, state, and federal government, insurance companies, volunteers, and non-profit organizations. The pace has been frustrating, but the progress is hopeful and undeniable.
Let this be a reality check for us. Hardship happens, even in paradise. And purpose persists in devastation. I wonder which reality brings more fulfillment, maintaining the beauty or reclaiming it? Serving the distracted or the distressed?
Wherever you are, know that your external conditions don’t define your reality. You do, by orienting yourself properly to what is good and worthwhile. The condition of your heart.
I suppose doing nothing on the beach is fun for a time. Personally, it’s not my jam. But perhaps people thrive and most benefit by helping others and doing hard things that matter. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
