Yesterday I was the opening keynote for five hundred business owners. What a fantastic experience, sharing stories and lessons, as I’ve run my own biz since I was a kid. But whatever your career path, I believe we are all most successful operating as entrepreneurs – taking maximum ownership while betting on ourselves.
Here are five keys to unlock your entrepreneurial mindset.
1. Embrace responsibility. Entrepreneurs own their circumstances, choices, words, and actions, as well as the results that follow. This helps you avoid wasting time by complaining or blaming others.
2. Create and communicate value. Successful businesses articulate the problems they then solve, not just once but repeatedly. When you anticipate needs or challenges, handle them, and then explain why you did, you rapidly rise in value.
3. Prioritize your health. Entrepreneurs know they are their most valuable asset because there’s no replacement for you. Your mental and physical well being isn’t an optional afterthought. It’s priority.
4. Take positive risks. Playing it safe is an illusion, and the most risky strategy may be waiting for someone else to advocate or act. The way to minimize the downside is taking positive risks aligned with clear purpose, values, and strategy.
5. Learn constantly. Entrepreneurs learn from failures, successes, and everything in between. This keeps you sharp, resilient, and unphased by criticism or praise.
Apply these five keys to your job, family, and life. Or, take the bigger risk of not applying them. Because your business is taking care of you – your mind, body and soul – while serving others in ever more meaningful ways. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
