In 1799, in nearby Midland, North Carolina, 12 year old Conrad Reed’s arrow missed his intended fish and landed mid-stream near a shiny yellow rock. For three years that rock lay dormant, literally, used as a doorstop until it was finally discovered as gold, spurring a booming family business and the dreams of many seeking opportunity.
Which of your “misses” are pointing to something promising? What opportunities do you already possess, but haven’t fully appreciated or acted upon? Remember, momentum begins with a single step.
The next big wave for Charlotte was transportation. Through the 1800’s, building its position as “Gateway to the South,” this railway hub became the center for connection and expansion.
Our lesson: Your momentum can only take you so far. It takes connections to others, elsewhere, to make bigger moves or further impact. And your connections aren’t just a means to an end, but have their own inherent value. So, deepen the connections you have while constantly making more.
That takes us to scale. Because of its early vision, helpful regulations, and connections, Charlotte has grown to a global banking center. That has changed the skyline and helped make this one of America’s fastest growing cities.
