I’m in Orlando, where I just delivered my last speech of the year, asking: What’s your biggest mistake of 2025? And how could you make that next year’s secret weapon?
My biggest mistake of the year? In a word… complacency. Making certain assumptions that weren’t accurate, or skipping some little things that actually mattered a lot. I could have done the basics better, and that led to some missed opportunities.
When we screw it up, make a mess, or waste time and money, it’s so easy to say… well just move on. Better luck next time. But that could compound the mistake. It’s so important to acknowledge our errors, not to beat yourself up. To build yourself up!
Do you truly understand what happened, why it happened, and your role in causing or inviting the problem? What did you not see coming? What did you do, or not do, that led to this outcome?
If we don’t take responsibility we will likely repeat the mistake. Not identically, but in a different, bigger way. That’s how patterns work. If we don’t learn and incorporate the lesson, if we don’t pass the test, the problem comes back. And next time the consequences will be more costly as if to say, “Now, do I have your attention?”
Let’s skip that part and gain the benefit of our blunders, because some lessons are expensive, and you get what you pay for – valuable experience, humility, and hard won wisdom.
When we truly learn the lessons, voice them, and commit to a new path, our mistakes become our biggest breakthrough opportunities. So, congratulations, and until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
