When you encounter an incredible time sensitive opportunity, what is your typical response? From Detroit, let’s tap the power of “one time only.”
“We’ve never done this before. Today’s offer is one time only!” If you’re like me, you’ve become jaded to the noise of marketers desperately seeking your attention and your money, especially if you’ve been burned.
Yet this is your reality. Every experience and conversation happens in a singular, fleeting moment that will never be exactly the same again. Even routine occurrences are original and infused with potential if you can see it then seize it. So why don’t we?
Well, “one time only” is also a method of self-deceit. I’ll skip it this time. Or, I’ll lower my standards, ignore my intentions, or betray my values just this once. It’s an exception. Except it usually isn’t because every choice is also a future precedent.
There were days you didn’t know better. But as you gain experience and self-knowledge you are increasingly complicit in your destiny or demise. One-time passes can quickly become patterns that inhibit growth, limit opportunities, lower self-esteem and never quite satisfy.
Next time you feel stuck or unsatisfied, try this. Do something different, one time only. Maybe refrain from anger or self-criticism. Ask for help. Take a chance. Interrupt your pre-programming. Not forever. Just this once. Then notice how you feel and the changes that follow.
Both self-destruction and self-improvement begin in a moment with a choice. Please believe you have more to learn, give, and do in this amazing life that is yours one time only. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
