Push back comes in many forms, and our response to it says a lot about our character and commitment. From La Jolla, California let’s reframe resistance.
Resistance is information. A life without challenge isn’t all that interesting, and trying to avoid certain difficulties almost certainty leads to others. So the question is, when you meet resistance, how do you respond?
Joseph Kennedy famously said, “When the going gets tough the tough get going,” meaning when pursuing what’s right we should push forward, overcoming all obstacles. But what if the “tough going” is an indication that you’re wrong, off course, or uninformed? In that case, resistance serves to slow you down to self assess.
Where in your life are you facing resistance right now? Instead of getting tough, emotional, or reactive, apply these three steps to determine your next move.
1. Reflect. Instead of taking it personally, take an honest, objective look. Are you repeating patterns that are already proven flawed? Or are you charting a course toward something better, honorable, and true?
2. Regroup. Take a breath, or a rest, to gather clarity and courage. Based on your honest evaluation, will you change course or press on?
3. Respond. Either way, be grateful for the info. Then, make the adjustments that resistance has taught you are necessary, or recommit with confirmation that you’re on the right path. Sometimes it’s a bit of both.
Just like building muscle or skill, resistance is required to build confidence, character, and successful strategies. So when the going gets tough, get honest, get smarter, and then get going. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
