Set the Date

READ THE TRANSCRIPT.

Are you effectively leveraging your primary productivity tool? From Hilton Head, South Carolina, let’s supercharge your calendar.
I’m here for a multi-generational vacation: My parents, my siblings, and our families. We’re all busy people, yet we’re here for two reasons. Months ago, we set the date and then we showed up.
Things happen when we schedule them to happen and then honor our commitments to ourselves and others. I know this sounds obvious, but this practice goes under utilized. And trust me, I put myself in that category.
We get good at last minute plans and adjustments. I enjoy being spontaneous. But for big goals, measurable growth, and important experiences, especially those involving other people, we need to set the date and protect it.
This also works for daily activity, whether you do it electronically or old school. Recently I went back to my Franklin planner, finding it a fun and effective flashback to my superproductive past.
Schedule your morning routines, exercise, and daily disciplines, as well as work tasks, play, and social time. Need more creativity, focus, or direction? Schedule “thinking time” on your calendar then show up as planned without distractions to raise your intellectual aims.
And stop saying things like, “I really need to work out more often” or “We should totally get together sometime” or “I’m going to get that done soon.” All meaningless, “snooze button” phrases that make you feel better without changing anything.
If you want change, set the date. Then become the person who honors your commitments, barring truly unpredictable circumstances. It won’t be long before others start taking you more seriously and you see results that are truly impressive, although not that surprising. After all, you set the date. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
