I’m in Toronto while significant winter storms hit here and back home in Atlanta. Today’s message: When you know the storm’s coming, you still have options.
Originally, I was traveling here tomorrow, but I changed my flight to arrive yesterday. Why? Well, understanding what was forecast and the potential for airport disruptions, it’s the only way I could be certain to keep my commitment to deliver my client’s closing keynote.
The leadership principle: When disruption is coming, waiting for certainty often reduces your options. Moving early creates them. High performers don’t necessarily avoid the storm. They manage their position before the storm arrives.
Look, I’m not saying I have it all figured out. But I am in a comfortable hotel two days early where I can rest, work out, and be productive, instead of waiting and worrying if I can even get here. And that move has enhanced my standing with both my client and the bureau that booked this engagement.
So, when you see a storm coming, physical or metaphorical, consider these three questions.
1. What can you control? Own the fact that you have options to advance, improve, and assist.
2. What commitment must be protected? Of course, safety and loved ones first. And also, your client, team, and reputation.
3. Where do you need to be to keep options open? Where you wait determines how you can respond.
This week, identify one decision you’ve been delaying because conditions aren’t clear. Then ask, what would give you more leverage if it gets worse. Make that move early so you’ll be better positioned when the storm hits. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
