When does a normal walk become a quest for adventure? From Puerto Rico, here’s a story of spontaneous celebration.
I’m in San Juan, Puerto Rico for a speech. After arriving yesterday, I took a walk to explore the area and soon noticed many others crossing the bridge headed toward Old San Juan. So, I followed. The streams of people soon became rivers, then with the addition of busloads, an eventual sea of humanity, all ascending toward the old fort and packing the city streets.
Turns out yesterday was the last day of Fiesta de Calle San Sebastián, or SanSe for short, a four day celebration of the end of a season of celebrations. Bottom line: These people love to party and be together!
I didn’t stay into the evening when it really gets wild. By the time I got back to the hotel I had walked seven miles and was pretty spent. But here are some takeaways that may help you, where you are right now.
First, take time to celebrate. With so much to do, moments, seasons, and achievements can go by in a blur, each leading into the next. Don’t be so busy that you miss the chance to celebrate what’s happened or what is happening.
Second, there is energy in numbers. We all have our personal comfort zones when it comes to crowds. But it’s meaningful to connect with others and even experience, from time to time, the power of large scale community.
And lastly, you don’t have to know where you’re going to have fun getting there. Sometimes it’s okay to follow the crowd, especially when you’re getting a little exercise and experiencing new surroundings.
From here I go to Minneapolis where the weather will be quite different. But wherever you are, or whatever you’re doing, especially when things get tough, seek uplifting people and spontaneous opportunities to celebrate. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
