In many ways success seems a personal pursuit. You live your life. Think your thoughts. Make your own decisions. But often we prosper and grow best in community. Maybe it’s time you join the club.
I’m in Boston at the historic Harvard Club, where I delivered a seminar for Club Managers of America – an association for those who manage private clubs for lifestyle, sports, and professional excellence.
I’ve done hundreds of events for associations of all kinds and served as president of the National Speakers Association. It’s beneficial to be with others who share similar values and aspirations.
Groucho Marx famously said, “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.” Great line, although he did have four brothers. You see, the truth is we need people to help us see a path, shape a strategy, or learn timeless lessons in a more timely manner.
Groups take many forms: Professions, passions, fitness, faith, deep learning, and better living. So first ask, “what aspect of my life do I want to expand or improve?” Then, “What community might help?”
After, perhaps, some “club hopping” to find the right fit, join up. But to really gain benefit, get involved. Even as a new member, you can be of some service. And “give before you get” is a great way to build relationships.
In associations you gain access to a timeline of excellence. Veterans share history and stories, answer thoughtful questions, and impart wisdom, while innovators offer their exciting vision of what’s current and coming.
Information is everywhere. But people provide the application, hard learned lessons, and personal encouragement. So choose your own adventure. Then, maybe, join the club. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
