What simple, three letter word could open new opportunities and help you overcome limiting beliefs? Let’s answer that from Bluffton, South Carolina.
I spoke yesterday for my client’s exclusive top performers’ event. Rewards feel good because your brain craves completion. That’s why any task, large or small, first envisioned then accomplished, brings an uplifting dopamine release.
In brain science, that’s called a closed loop or completion bias. But there’s another way to close a loop that’s not especially helpful. Claim your limitations. For example, “I’m can’t do that.” “We don’t get along.” Or, “I don’t understand this at all.”
While seeming harmless, such statements actually close a loop. Your brain accepts this as fact, steering you away from conflicting information or future opportunities, creating a self fulfilling prophesy. To change that, just add one word: yet.
I don’t speak a second language yet.
We don’t have a great relationship yet.
I haven’t reached that career or health goal yet.
I know, this seems like wordplay, but it’s actually powerful programming. The word yet, leaves the loop open and your brain stays engaged. You’ve sent the message, this is something I’m open to improving or doing. Don’t give up on this. You’ll be alerted to opportunities to learn what you don’t yet know or attain what right now seems unlikely.
So don’t be so quick to claim your limitations. You’re just not there yet. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
