When can words lose their impact? Let’s ensure we get the point and convey the right message. Words are amazing, powerful, and essential to our lives. So, we should use them with care and precision.
Yet words are often insufficient as they are representations of meaning. Whatever we call a thing or a feeling, it is certainly far more than that. Experience fills in the gaps, but is widely varied and deeply personal. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, if you knew how a rose smelled and liked it.
Even our most expert summaries or descriptions are incomplete. And the most urgent or heartfelt advice often misses the mark. Here are three ways words can fall short and how you can make up the difference.
1. Words withheld. What you think but don’t say may be the most important part. It can be difficult to be direct but gets easier with practice. And it’s not the thought that counts but the words we thoughtfully express.
2. Words watered down. Words are often are strongest when concentrated, and the more we say, the more we may diminish the impact. So strive for both directness and brevity. Say what you mean succinctly. Then listen.
3. Hollow words. If your words are incongruent with your behavior or body language, you’re shooting blanks. And this doesn’t just undermine your communication, but also your credibility. So, get it together, or leave it alone.
If you want to effectively express or persuade, be direct, be succinct, and be congruent, as your voice, expressions, and actions will drive the point home. So, be imperfect and improving. And until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
