I’ve been doing this weekly coaching series for nine years, and I think it’s time to say… maybe you shouldn’t listen to me. Here’s an honest take on the real value of others’ opinions.
Like the waves of the ocean, every day we are bombarded by information: “experts” on every subject and, if we’re lucky, real life advocates and well meaning friends. But much of what we hear isn’t helpful. Some of it’s plain wrong. And the fact is, what works for some may not work for others. Like the disclaimer on the car commercial, when it comes to real life application, your mileage may vary.
Humans are complex and different by design. We arrive in this world with unique personalities and dispositions, which you know for sure if you have family. Then, we get impacted by life. Exposed to environments. Influenced by others. We get stretched, bent, and sometimes, broken.
So this is just a reminder, my friends. Free advice is often worth what you pay for it. Paid advice can be equally unhelpful and expensive. And yet there are gold nuggets and crystal keys that will unlock your palace or prison. So, how do we proceed when it’s hard to know the difference? Well, here’s my advice.
First, when it comes to sources, be extremely selective. Ask, “Have they done this or just heard this?” Also, “Does this actually apply to me and my circumstances?” And as a person of faith I also ask, “is this spiritually sound?” Consult the ultimate source.
And secondly, be realistic. Is what you’re hearing within your grasp, and are you actually willing to do it? Over time, it’s become increasingly clear to me: people usually need to learn their own lessons.
I honestly strive to be helpful and encouraging, not as an expert, but as a fellow human alive with you at this moment. Because I know we can both get better, and when we do, that’s better for everyone. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
