The truth about anything you enjoy, admire, or aspire to achieve, is that there is a process and investment you don’t see. This two minute video takes you backstage into the pursuit of excellence and delivers ideas to help you attain and appreciate more of what truly matters … to you!

What you see is not what you get. It’s a fraction of what was offered and what is required. This week we’re Off Balance On Purpose in San Diego.
What you see, experience, and enjoy is misleading. Take these weekly, two-minute videos, for example. It’s just two minutes, right?
Each week, after I get an idea, I invest at least two hours to write and shoot the script, by myself, usually at sunrise. Then I select the best clips, upload those and label them for easy editing, which takes maybe another hour.
Then my son, Eddie, downloads the files, as well as, my notes and suggestions. He chooses the music to fit the piece, which takes time, and then the editing process starts. Cutting, color correction, audio adjustments, graphics. From start to finish, provided there’s no unexpected issues, that process on average add another three hours of time and energy.
Once the video is finished and approved, my wife, Shay takes over. She optimizes the video for each platform, adds close captioning, schedules the uploads, crafts the email, and will contributed another 2-3 hours before it’s “done.” Then our daughter, Maggie, uploads to Instagram.
That’s about eight hours invested, plus the years of our respective learning curves, so that you can get the value of all that thought and creative work in about two minutes. Now, you could say the process could be streamlined or that the standards are too high. But that’s not the point. So what’s the point?
Doing something well is never easy. The challenge is to make it look easy, so that the result arrives unencumbered by additional baggage. The truth about anything you admire, enjoy, and appreciate, is there’s a process and investment you don’t see.
Don’t fool yourself thinking that you can get the results without the process. Savor the experiences with the appreciation that it’s harder than it looks. And do the work without telling everyone how hard it is. Because if you do, you’ve missed the opportunity to deliver the magic.
Have a magical holiday, and I look forward to another year of learning and growing together… Off Balance On Purpose.
Thanks for all your hours and skills to put these weekly videos together. They are fantastic! I watch them, then forward them to my kids and sometimes other friends who might find the message relevant. The time you take to provide these important messages are so appreciated by me and mine. Have a Happy Holiday season, and we hope to see you all some time in the coming new year.
So glad that you are enjoying and sharing the messages. We work hard, but also have a lot of fun in the process. And we take real pride in a quality body of work, produced as a family team. Lifelines! Happy Holidays to you and yours, and also looking forward to time in 2020!
Awesome vid this week. Love how you have made this a family project. Growing, learning, and contributing to untold numbers of careers while honing your family culture, skills, and interests. Amazing!
Nice to see what everyone does, even the knight has a job, security!
The work behind the work.
And even though this video does actually what your last sentence said to” not do”…’to tell people how hard the work is’
the point being is that you don’t tell how hard the work is, every time you make a video, a speech, or a show.
I have a food truck ( amongst my other 3 businesses), and it is hard work, more hours than anyone imagines…now and then I tell people ( friends) how much work
goes into it…but not the customers.
But there is a great song by Jackson Browne called ‘The Load out’…but most
people just remember the part called ‘Stay’. And it is about the work no one sees…and oddly enough it is only the end of the song people will recall…
where he is asking the people to stay just a little bit longer.
Thank you for all the weekly videos Dan…Eddie, Shelia, the Knight and Maggie. The year went by fast, I wish it would stay just a little bit longer.
Beautiful comment, Tak! And yeah, everyone needs a knight. I’m on the road a lot, so he keeps an eye on my family when I’m not around.
You’re the FIRST to mention the intentional twist that I broke my own rule. Good catch. And that Jackson Browne song is a classic… all of it! And while this year is on the way out, something tells me 2020 will be full of incredible surprises!
