What would you do if you needed emergency dental care in a foreign country? When this happened to Dan last week in Dubai, here’s what followed, and what we might all need to learn about managing the unanticipated.
Yesterday, I had an amazing speech here in Dubai, one of the world’s most popular and extraordinary travel cities. Headed home tomorrow. So what are my wife and I doing with our one and only “free day?” Shopping? Touring? Sailing? Nope. Going to the dentist!
There is so much to see in this incredible city, but the reality is, I have a loose front crown and very little time once we get home. Turns out dental care in Dubai is both renowned and affordable, making travel dentistry one of this city’s many attractions. Sold!
It seems to us we have two choices. See this as a negative distraction from what we could have done and be disappointed and resentful. Or see it for what it is – a stroke of luck, a problem solved, and a great story to tell later … or now. You see, the main thing about the main thing IS the main thing. And right now, I need to tend to my choppers. So let’s think of this as a spa day for the smile.
After a quick taxi ride to Palm Jumariah, we found ourselves entering Dr. Joy Dental Center, which definitely lived up to its name. Everyone was friendly and efficient. Within five minutes, I was X-rayed and with Dr. Sayed, who put me right at ease. With expertise and empathy – as a fellow speaker – he developed a plan and got my tooth sealed, re-shaped, and ready for action. What a fantastic experience and really great reminder. Life is an adventure, in any circumstances. You can handle what’s needed with appreciation, kindness, and even joy.
So wherever you are, be present, prioritize, and never look a gift tooth in the mouth. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
