Today’s question comes from Danielle who asks, “How do I do my job and fulfill my better/bigger/real purpose at the same time?” I love this question, Danielle, as it brings to mind your personal mission – responsibilities that go beyond your job description and demands. So let’s talk about this in three aspects: What you do, how you do it, and why.
When is your work far bigger than your job? And how do you expand to fulfill the requirements?
Today’s question comes from Danielle who asks, “How do I do my job and fulfill my better/bigger/real purpose at the same time?” I love this question, Danielle, as it brings to mind your personal mission – responsibilities that go beyond your job description and demands. So let’s talk about this in three aspects: What you do, how you do it, and why.
First, What you do. Fulfill your workplace responsibilities … and then some. This means attention to quality, detail, and follow through effort. Contribute insights and ideas. Promote yourself to a higher level of awareness and authority. Not above others, but overseeing yourself.
Next, How you do it. Define your personal values or the rules by which you operate and, by association, the things you won’t do, say, or accommodate. You’ll gain self satisfaction by adherence to your personal code.
And finally, Why you do it. Purpose. Not about you, but in response to something bigger than you – your secret mission. Encourage those who are hurting or operating in fear. Improve all you influence.
When you serve a purpose, you become less concerned about others’ behavior. As an agent for good, your reward is intrinsically satisfying and far greater than a paycheck. In this way, you may actually feel sympathy for those who choose to play it small and just “do their job.”
I hope that helps you, Danielle. Keep the great questions coming my friends, and until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
